工藤の長編3作目「遠いところ」は、沖縄の若年層の実態を描いた物語。沖縄の子供の困窮した状況、DV、シングルマザーの様子を追ったルポルタージュに工藤が自身の生い立ちを重ね合わせたことから企画が生まれ、独自に取材を重ね全編沖縄で撮影した。。In the mid-70s, surfers from Venice-Santa Monica who hung out at the Zephyr Surf Shop would skateboard when the surf was quiet.
