青年段志高来到小桥车站学习锻炼。小桥站全体员工在站长“老解决”的带领下辛勤工作，并和附近公社亲如一家。但是，段志高热情有余、经验不足，常好心办坏事。这让即将退休的老站务员“老怀表”看不过去。站长“老解决” 生产队妇女队长胖大嫂有心相爱，但却不好意思主动表白。扳道员“小发明”和在生产队的姐姐铁英暗地筹划利用河水建立一个小发电站，段志高积极参与计划。生产队在清理仓库时发现了一个废弃的发电机，老站长与胖队长商谈此事。“秦广播”误听了老站长的梦话后安排老站长与胖队长会面，两人虽然话不对题，却终于明白了对方的心意。小发电站发现成功，“老解决”和胖队长终成眷属，双喜临门，大家欢呼庆祝。“老怀表”看到年轻人的力量，觉得可以放心从岗位上退下了。。Saturday Night Live aired its eighth season during the 1982–1983 season on NBC.
