顺吉（三浦友和 饰）出生于大富大贵之家，父亲是极为保守之人，家教亦是严苛。成长在这样的家庭里，顺吉却爱上了守林人的女儿小雪（山口百惠 饰），两人虽然在阶级上相去甚远，但对彼此的感情却像雪一样的纯洁和真挚。得知了顺吉和小雪之间的恋情的恋情，顺吉的父亲勃然大怒，他需要的是门当户对的儿媳妇，而不是什么下等杂工的女儿。 为了拆散这对苦命鸳鸯，顺吉的父亲将小雪远送他乡，可是，这并没能割断顺吉对小雪的爱意，顺吉和小雪私奔了。有情人终成眷属的日子里，小雪和顺吉都领悟了幸福的真谛，然而，一纸征兵令的到达却再次让两人分隔两地。夜夜思念远在战场上的顺吉，小雪不幸患上了肺结核病，没有了顺吉的音讯，在悲伤之中，唱着两人约定中的歌谣，小雪的生命迅速的走向了终结。。Disarmingly realistic in its depiction of the realities of frontier life, Heartland is a strong antidote to the cliches of traditional Westerns. This semi-documentary slice of life is based on the diaries of Elmore Randall Stewart about her days on the Wyoming frontier in the early 20th century. It's a strongly feminist statement about a woman raising her small daughter alone and scrapping for a living by working for a shy Scottish rancher. Director Richard Pearce brings an endearing touch to a film that is helped greatly by the dazzling cinematography of Fred Murphy. Conchata Ferrell and Rip Torn star in this small film that substitutes veracity for a high-powered plot. Pearce worked as a cinematographer on Woodstock and other documentaries before making his directorial debut. Winner of the 1980 Berlin Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival。
